Who was F. M. Alexander?

Alexander blev født i Tasmanien i Australien i 1869. Han voksede op med en lidenskab for heste og teater og uddannede sig til skuespiller.

Tidligt i sin karriere fik Alexander problemer med hæshed og decideret stemmesvigt. Talepædagogers og lægers råd hjalp ikke, og da han til sidst mistede stemmen, forstod han, at det var noget han gjorde med sin krop, der forårsagede problemet.

Han studerede sin krop i spejle og konstaterede, at han stivnede i nakken, når han talte. Dette udløste et pres på strubehovedet, hvilket forårsagede hæsheden.

Ved tålmodigt arbejde lykkedes det Alexander at stoppe sit reaktionsmønster.

Han fandt tilbage til kroppens udgangspunkt, hvor hoved, nakke og ryg forholder sig frit til hinanden i et dynamisk forhold,

Alexander was born in Tasmania, Australia in 1869. He grew up with a passion for horses and theater and trained as an actor.

Early in his career, Alexander suffered from hoarseness and a decidedly weak voice. The advice of speech therapists and doctors did not help and in the end he lost his voice. He realized that it was something he did while reciting, that was causing the problem.

He studied himself with the aid of mirrors and ascertained that he stiffened the back of his neck when he spoke. This strained his larynx, which caused his hoarseness.

By working patiently with himself, Alexander succeeded in stopping his negative patterns of reaction

I løbet af ca. ti år udviklede Alexander det, der i dag kaldes Alexanderteknik. I 1930 etablerede han den første uddannelse af Alexanderlærere.

Alexander underviste i London til sin død i 1955 og var en anerkendt lærer og forfatter til fire markante bøger.

Uddannelsen tager tre år og fungerer i dag efter vedtagne regler fra den engelske organisation The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique STAT i samarbejde med de affilierede afdelinger blandt andet i Danmark.

Over the course of about ten years, Alexander developed what is now called the Alexander Technique. In 1930 he established the first course of education for Alexander teachers.

Alexander taught in London until his death in 1955. He was a respected teacher and an author of four books

The training course is a 3 year course and today it works after the rules of The Society of the Alexander Technique STAT in London in collaboration with the affilieted societies amongst others the danish.
