J. H. Pilates underviser

Hvem var J. H. Pilates?

Who was J. H. Pilates?

Pilates was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1880. He practiced yoga, acrobatics, gymnastics, skiing diving and boxing.

In 1912 he traveled to London, where he became a professional boxer and self-defense instructor for Scotland Yard. When the First World War broke out, he was interned because of his German citizenship. During his internment, he spent his time refining his ideas about health and physical training. He studied everything from yoga to the movements of animals.

In 1918 an influenza epidemic killed thousands of people, but none of those who trained under him died. Pilates was certain that this was due to the good shape they were in after a long period of intense training under his expert guidance.

After the war he returned to Germany, where he collaborated with other leading pioneers in the field of exercise techniques.

In 1923 he immigrated to the United States. Together with his wife Clara, he continued his work. They established a studio and quickly became recognized, especially by the dancing community.

Martha Graham and George Balanchine were particularly dedicated to Pilates, and since then large numbers of dancers have practiced the Pilates method.
´They discovered that this was a method that could not only be used for rehabilitation after injuries, but also to prevent injuries to a considerable extent.

Pilates continued to develop and invent new ways of working with the exercises until his death in 1967.
Pilates never established a school where he could train instructors in his method. Instead, his clients went out and taught what they had learned.

Today e training of Pilates instructors is both structured and formulated within different ‘schools.’
